But is it really worth the expectations or is it really a big hype? Read on and know.

What is Saccharomyces boulardii? Benefits, Uses

For those who are not aware, Saccharomyces boulardii is a type of yeast or a healthy probiotic derived from the skin of fruit plants such as lychee and mangosteen. It is a non-pathogenic yeast that was first discovered in French Indochina by Henry Boulard in 1920.

While it is primarily used to treat cases of gastrointestinal conditions, many people use it to reduce skin conditions, urinary tract infections, high cholesterol, acne, and canker sores.

Saccharomyces boulardii offers numerous health benefits that range from stimulating the immune system and protecting the digestive health.

Optibac Saccharomyces boulardii can help you with the following conditions:

  • Diarrhea
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

How does Optibac Saccharomyces boulardii work?

There are several studies on Saccharomyces boulardii. Here is a look at Saccharomyces boulardii’s effects on various health conditions as per a few studies.

Gastrointestinal Disorders

As per a report published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology in 2010, Saccharomyces boulardii may aid in treating/preventing of specific GI disorders. For the report, they analyzed 27 clinical trials testing the use of Saccharomyces boulardii for different conditions. Based on it, they got significant evidence that Saccharomyces boulardii can prevent traveler’s diarrhea and diarrhea associated with the use of antibiotics.

Additionally, it is also indicated that Saccharomyces boulardii can help in treating irritable bowel syndrome, adult diarrhea, and Crohn’s disease. That said, the authors say that more research needs to be done for recommending Saccharomyces boulardii to treat these conditions.

Another pilot study published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2003 found that patients with UC (ulcerative colitis) may benefit with the combination of Saccharomyces boulardii and mesalazine (an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat IBD). A study with 25 patients with a mild to a moderate flare-up of UC took Saccharomyces boulardii for four weeks thrice a day with maintenance treatment with mesalazine. Of the 24 patients, 17 had gone into remission by the end of the study.

Saccharomyces boulardii is also known to treat acute diarrhea in infants, says 2011 study published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. The study involved 186 infants hospitalized within 72 hours of acute diarrhea, each of whom were given Saccharomyces boulardii or a placebo for five days. Among the 176 infants who completed the study, those treated with Saccharomyces boulardii had a substantially reduced duration of diarrhea as compared to the placebo group.
